MASIH is an abbreviation of Masak Bersih which is a direct translation of "clean cooking" in Bahasa Indonesia.

MASIH was founded by Hillary Buntara and Tika Diagnestya in 2018. The team won the 2018 D-Prize competition to kickstart pilot efforts. The pair met in mid 2015 during their internship in the United Nations and decided to start MASIH because of their similar interests to reduce economic inequality and improve the lives of Indonesians in rural areas.

THE PROBLEM

~40% of households (24 million) in Indonesia still use traditional biomass fuels to cook. Traditional biomass cooking causes high levels of indoor air pollution, which, in 2014, led to ~165,000 premature deaths.

Households do not transition away from wood for their primary cooking fuel because of the financial barrier of buying a cookstove that utilizes other fuel sources. In addition to the lack of financing to allow purchase of cleaner cookstoves, households feel little need to shift to alternatives because they are not aware of the negative health impacts of wood burning.

FUND A CLEAN COOKSTOVE

The financing options we offer our customers rely on cookstoves donated by people like you. We believe that in order for solutions to be long-lasting, they need to come at a cost to the user. MASIH is a non-profit company and will use all funds received for the operations (conducting site visits, workshops, training for local talent and product use), maintenance and purchase of cookstoves. With IDR 350,000, you'll be providing a household with one clean cookstove.

OUR SOLUTION

MASIH aims to educate these rural communities on the benefits of shifting away from open wood burning and provide affordable financing options to purchase clean cookstoves that can reduce the impact of wood burning or that utilize alternative fuel options. One of our financing options depends on patrons like you to donate a stove. Studies have shown that products are better taken care of when a user has to sacrifice (money) in order to obtain the product. Your donation will help MASIH purchase stoves in advance, conduct workshops, community visits, maintenance and employment of local manpower.
